2013 ABA Youth Band Camp

On 15-17th March 2013 young brass players from across Auckland came together at YMCA Camp Adair near Hunua for a weekend of fun and music making.

Organised by Dalewool’s own Kay Mackenzie on behalf of the Auckland Brass Band Association this was the first time the event has been held since 2009.Read More

Legendary trombone virtuoso David Bremner (himself an ex-Dalewool player!) was able to clear space in his busy schedule to fly up from Wellington and lend his skills as musical director.

Also assisting was Dalewool trombonist Marc Nethercot:

‘It’s always a pleasure working with good kids and we had a great group. Some were very talented, others had only started playing a few weeks before. Considering how long it has been since the last band camp we had really good numbers. Kay did an amazing job organising every detail, nothing was overlooked. I’m sure there will be even more young players next year!’

Also helping with the music making was Jennifer Raven (Dalewool percussion) and Peter Whyte (Waitakere Brass cornet), thanks also must go to everyone else helping, especially in the kitchen!

Cornwall Park 2013 – Retrospective

After a couple of years away, Dalewool were pleased to return to the Cornwall Park band rotunda on Sunday 24th February.

The weather was beautiful (the large audience battled for shade!) and the band were on good form.

Nigel Weeks’ programme drew on the traditional repertoire for a lazy afternoon in the park.Read More

Highlights were Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Pie Jesu featuring Kay Mackenzie on soprano cornet and Lisa Rodgers on flugelhorn, Ross Gerritsen (it’s been a while!) blitzing through Peter Graham’s Brillante and new solo trombone Mike Ashton shmoozing through Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust.

Thanks to friends Grant Langdon, Robert Simpson and Phil Spriggs for assisting and covering for some of the team who couldn’t make it.

See you next year!
