New name for Band

In the late 1990’s when a strong association with Fosters came to an end, Dalewool Holdings Limited through the late Peter McDermott became the naming rights sponsor. At the time the band was one of the only a few nationwide to have sustained several high profile corporate sponsorship deals. Turrells Onehunga (Engineering) was the first corporate sponsor in the 1970’s which was the beginning of over 40 years of financial support at a time when the band was a dominating force nationally and internationally. At the end of the Turrells deal the band forged a partnership with US aviation giant, Continental Airlines and through the 1980s were a highly saught after entertainment option, featuring on television and radio. And of course the band appeared in many regional, national and international competitions. When Continental
Airlines ceased operations in New Zealand the sponsorship ended and moved to Carlton and United Breweries brandishing the name “Fosters Auckland Brass” which under the baton of Nigel Weeks dominated the New Zealand Banding landscape through the 1990’s and into the 2000s. The change of name to Dalweool Auckland Brass stemmed from the love of music that Peter McDermott wanted to support. This allowed the band to continue to deliver a strong annual programme of concerts and competitions. However, times have changed and corporate sponsorship in Brass Bands has changed significantly. At the 2017 National Championships only 3 of the 22 bands attending had corporate branding – a long way from the years
of Air New Zealand Palmerston North Brass, Warnocks Wanganui, Evening Post Onslow, Cobb & Co Waitakere, Trust Bank Rotorua and Skellerup Woolston. And now, for the first time in over 40 years the band is also without corporate sponsorship and so we undergo a brand change reflective of this. In line with the band’s official title, City of Sails Auckland Brass Inc. the band has been renamed City of Sails Brass – under the assumption Auckland is obvious! We look forward to writing another fabulous chapter in this band’s story.
